The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is working to establish maritime safety standards across the country, as confirmed by CEO Joeli Cawaki. Currently, there are no standardized safety measures set, but MSAF is committed to improving this situation and will begin auditing all shipping companies and their vessels next month, starting with roll-on, roll-off vessels.
Cawaki highlighted the necessity of MSAF offices at all local jetties to facilitate maritime safety inspections, with plans to expand their presence, particularly in regions lacking coverage such as Kadavu and Lau. He stressed the importance of being present wherever vessels operate to ensure both safety and regulatory compliance.
In an effort to uphold maritime safety and environmental protection, MSAF will conduct thorough inspections of all types of vessels used for transporting people, from large ferries to small wooden boats. This includes auditing the functionality of machines on board and verifying crew qualifications, ensuring that every vessel operates safely and effectively.
Cawaki aims for the initiative to heighten accountability among shipping operators, with the goal of instilling greater confidence among the public regarding maritime safety. He stated that passengers deserve to receive value for their transportation costs, especially when shipping companies promote luxurious travel experiences.
The proactive measures taken by MSAF to enhance maritime regulations can lead to a significant advancement in the safety and reliability of Fiji’s maritime operations. By implementing these standards, the authority is not only working towards safeguarding passengers but also strengthening the public’s trust in maritime transport, paving the way for a safer and more efficient travel environment in the future.
Addressing the current challenges reflects a positive outlook for Fiji’s shipping sector, hinting at a commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring that the maritime industry can provide secure and dependable services to its users.
