“Saiasi Fuli’s Coaching Future in Question: FRU Decision Awaited”

The future of Fijiana 7s head coach Saiasi Fuli now rests with the Fiji Rugby Union. When asked about his plans with the Fijiana 7s team after the Paris Olympic Games, Fuli stated that the decision was up to the FRU.

Following their fourth consecutive loss in the tournament, there were calls on social media for a change in the Fijiana 7s coaching panel. Critics questioned the systems in place, noting that Fuli has led the team for the past five years, and the players are experienced at this level.

“The intention is to coach them for the four-year cycle leading up to the Olympics and the next Olympics. It is for Fiji Rugby to decide; I can’t decide anything,” Fuli said. He mentioned that he had communicated his intentions to the team.

“I have other things to do in life for my family, but right now my focus is on completing the tournament here in Paris,” he added. Fuli took over the Fijiana 7s coaching role from Ro Alifereti Doviverata in 2019, leading the national women’s side to a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“I’ve managed myself well over the past four years, taking this team from tier two in 14th position to 6th, and in recent years we’ve progressed significantly. The reality of rugby is that sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Although the preparation was well-organized with support from Fiji Rugby, the Government, and the public, the result is what it is,” Fuli said.

The FRU is expected to conduct a full review of the Olympic teams in August. “I want to acknowledge and commend the dedication and hard work of Saiasi Fuli. Coach Fuli has been an integral part of our program, bringing his expertise to the development and performance of the Fijiana 7s team,” said FRU interim chair Peter Mazey.

“As is customary, we will conduct a comprehensive review of our Olympic campaign, including an assessment of all aspects of our preparation and performance, such as coaching, training programs, and support systems.”

Fuli and the Fijiana 7s team will depart France on August 2 and arrive in Fiji on August 4 alongside the men’s team.
