Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu has emphasized the need for parents to be more attentive and responsible during the school break. This advice comes in light of a tragic incident in which a five-year-old girl from Naituvatuvatu Village, Wainibuka, Tailevu, was swept away by strong currents while trying to cross the Waisomi River. The heart-wrenching incident occurred last Saturday as the girl, along with seven other children and her aunt, was returning from gathering edible lady fern (Ota).

The search effort, initiated by the village headman, included three police officers who worked diligently to locate the missing child. Unfortunately, the search had to be suspended due to darkness and poor weather conditions, but it resumed the following day, leading to the recovery of her body.

In the wake of this tragedy, ACPO Driu has urged parents to be extra vigilant and to spend more quality time with their children during the holidays. He advised families to steer clear of large gatherings and festivities during this period, highlighting the importance of safety and supervision.

The call for increased parental responsibility serves as a crucial reminder of the risks that can arise during seemingly routine activities, particularly in natural environments. While the incident is undeniably heartbreaking, it can foster greater awareness and vigilance among parents, ultimately leading to safer communities for children.

The incident reinforces the need for collective responsibility in ensuring children’s safety, particularly during school breaks when children may be more active and exposed to various risks. Let us use this moment to advocate for awareness and create an environment where children can explore safely, supported by responsible guardianship.
