Opposition MP Virendra Lal is urging the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations to enhance the regulations governing amusement rides to ensure public safety and prevent accidents. This call to action follows a recent incident involving a Ferris wheel at the Wairiki Sevens.
Lal emphasizes the urgent need for authorities to take decisive measures, including potentially banning unsafe rides until they are thoroughly evaluated and certified as safe. He stresses that the government should prioritize public safety by implementing strict safety standards, which would require continuous inspections and maintenance of all amusement rides.
“The safety of our people is a fundamental concern that must not be taken lightly. We must prevent further tragic occurrences,” Lal stated, advocating for immediate shutdowns of rides that cannot guarantee safety.
He pointed to the recent incident as a crucial reminder of the hazards associated with outdated and poorly maintained amusement attractions. Fortunately, no lives were lost this time, but the memory of a tragic accident at the Fiji Showcase in 2023, where a young woman died, underscores significant deficiencies in safety protocols.
As the Shadow Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lal expressed deep concern over significant oversights by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department. He stated, “Our amusement rides are not safe, and it is evident that the OHS department is not fulfilling its responsibilities. The incident on August 1st, where a child’s life was endangered due to a malfunctioning ride, necessitates urgent action.”
Lal argues that the existing safety measures are inadequate, particularly for amusement rides that have aged beyond a safe operating threshold. He remarked, “We are fortunate that the most recent accident did not claim a life, unlike the tragedy last year. This should serve as a wake-up call for all involved.”
This situation represents an opportunity for authorities to reassess their safety protocols and take proactive measures to safeguard the public, particularly vulnerable groups such as children. Ensuring the safety of amusement rides can restore public confidence in the sector and prevent future tragedies. There is hope that the call for stronger regulations will lead to a concerted effort to enhance safety standards and protect patrons visiting these venues.
