Authorities have announced that restricted movements will be implemented tonight in the towns of Ba, Rakiraki, and Tavua due to rising water levels that have begun to flood local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu emphasized that this precaution is crucial for the safety of residents and to protect the infrastructure within these towns.

The ACPO pointed out that the restrictions not only prioritize public safety but also aim to safeguard properties from potential opportunistic threats. Currently, four evacuation centers are operational in the Western Division, housing 226 individuals seeking shelter from the adverse weather conditions. With continued rainfall anticipated, the number of evacuation centers and evacuees is likely to increase.

As of now, the main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, and access to Tavua Town has been restricted. Additionally, the entrance to Ba town has been sealed off to ensure public safety. Police evacuation teams are actively working to assist individuals in disaster-prone areas and will remain on standby throughout the night. The Fiji Police Force is committed to closely monitoring the evolving situation.

This proactive response from the authorities highlights their dedication to the safety and well-being of the community during challenging weather events. Their readiness to provide assistance and ensure civilian safety is commendable and underscores the importance of community support in times of crisis.
