Authorities have implemented restricted movements across the towns of Ba, Rakiraki, and Tavua tonight due to rising water levels that have begun to encroach upon local shops. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these measures are vital for the safety of residents and to safeguard the towns’ infrastructure.
The decision to enforce these restrictions is a precautionary step aimed at ensuring public safety and protecting properties from potential looting during this emergency. Currently, four evacuation centers are operational within the Western Division, providing shelter for 226 individuals, a number that may increase if the rain persists.
All traffic has been halted on the main highway connecting Ba to Rakiraki, and access to Tavua Town has been restricted as well. ACP Driu mentioned that the entrance to Ba town is closed to vehicle traffic, with police teams actively evacuating individuals from high-risk areas and remaining on alert for further incidents.
The Fiji Police Force is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents affected by these adverse weather conditions.
In summary, while this situation is challenging, the community’s safety remains the top priority. Local authorities are responding promptly and effectively to safeguard the residents, which is commendable in a time of crisis. It is hoped that the situation will stabilize soon, allowing for a return to normalcy.
