Parents and teachers at Naitasiri High School are urging the government to take action to ensure the safety and reliability of transport services for students. This plea follows a recent accident that nearly resulted in a tragedy for 18 students and two parents.
Semi Tamanivalu, whose child was involved in a similar incident last year, highlighted the urgent need for improved transport for highland students. He noted that this incident marks the second time such an accident has occurred involving the same transport provider that services six villages in the region.
Last week, a mishap occurred while students were being transported to school, according to reports. Vatiri Dimoala Lutua, who was present during the latest accident, shared her harrowing experience, recalling the frightening scene filled with blood and the distressing cries of students. She emphasized that many students were looking forward to a typical school day and completing their Year 11 annual exams.
Lutua described her feelings of trauma and helplessness as she struggled to assist injured students. She recounted her efforts to free a spare tire that had trapped one student, expressing deep sorrow over the recurring nature of these accidents. Lutua was particularly affected, noting that some of the injured students had also faced injuries in the previous year’s incident, and she expressed hope that this would be the last accident of its kind.
