The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are ramping up road safety measures by deploying additional traffic patrols and checkpoints at high-risk and accident-prone intersections. This initiative is in response to a serious traffic accident that occurred yesterday in Vitogo, along Kings Road, involving a bus and a utility vehicle that resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital.
Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport Minister Filipe Tuisawau expressed his sympathies to the victims and emphasized the urgent need for all road users to uphold road safety regulations. He highlighted that the National Joint Operations Order, created in collaboration with the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers, aims to enhance road safety, reduce road fatalities, and ensure strict compliance with traffic rules.
This joint initiative is particularly timely as the festive season approaches, a period known for increased road traffic due to holiday activities, family gatherings, and various celebrations. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31, coinciding with this busy time.
As of November 11, road fatalities have decreased to 51 from 71 during the same timeframe last year, indicating a positive trend in road safety efforts.
Overall, while the recent accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, the proactive measures being taken by authorities reflect a commitment to creating safer roads for all. With continued vigilance and engagement from all road users, there is hope that these efforts will contribute to reducing accidents and ensuring a safer driving environment during the festive season.
