A tragic incident occurred last evening at the Ministry of Fisheries Office in Wainibokasi, Nausori, where an explosion resulted in the death of one person and left two others in critical condition. Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro reported that the explosion is believed to have been caused by a diving gas tank.
The incident follows a concerning pattern of accidents in the region; just days earlier, the Fiji Police reported the death of a man in his twenties from injuries sustained in a yacht explosion in Nadi. That incident involved the victim and a colleague performing maintenance on the yacht when an explosion occurred in the engine compartment, resulting in burns for both. The colleague remains hospitalized in critical condition.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in environments where flammable materials are present, whether in office settings or during maritime operations. The Ministry of Employment’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) has been actively investigating various safety protocols across different sectors, emphasizing the importance of compliance with safety standards to prevent such tragedies.
As investigations continue into both incidents, there is a glimmer of hope that the outcomes will lead to improved safety protocols, ensuring better protection for workers and the public in the future.
