Evacuation centres will be activated as needed, according to Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Disaster Management. Mr. Ditoka confirmed that several evacuation centres are currently operational and sheltering members of the public who are concerned about the safety of their homes amidst ongoing adverse weather conditions.

While he did not disclose the specific number of evacuation centres activated, this decision comes in response to inquiries from residents in flood-prone areas in and around Labasa regarding the availability of safe shelter. The minister advised that individuals who feel unsure about the structural integrity of their homes should seek refuge in evacuation centres during daylight hours to ensure their safety.

In tandem with these developments, the government has initiated food rations, set to commence distribution tomorrow for individuals residing in existing evacuation centres within the Western Division. Four such centres—Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office—are currently aiding 61 households and a total of 234 individuals. Generous donations, including cooked meals and hygiene kits, have been provided by various organizations, showcasing the community’s solidarity during this crisis.

Public advisories have been issued to encourage citizens to remain vigilant and prepared as a Flood Warning is in effect for various regions vulnerable to flooding, prompting the police to be ready to assist with evacuations if necessary. Residents are strongly advised to evacuate when directed and preferably during daylight hours for safety.

These concerted efforts highlight not only the responsive measures being undertaken to safeguard lives but also the spirit of cooperation among government and community agencies, fortifying the resilience of affected populations during these challenging times. With ongoing support and preparation, the local response showcases an optimistic outlook for recovery and safety.
