Bus users in Labasa are being urged to cooperate with local police to help identify those responsible for recent violent incidents involving buses. Mick Beddoes, a representative for the Fiji Bus Operators Association, emphasized the importance of collaboration in light of multiple stoning incidents that have led to safety concerns among drivers and have disrupted evening bus services.

Rohinil Chand, managing director of Dalip Chand and Son Pte Limited, announced the suspension of evening bus routes to Batinikama and Savusavutaga following a series of attacks, which have included reports of damage to buses and frightened drivers. Notably, recent incidents have involved both adults and students, contributing to a climate of fear and disruption for regular commuters who rely on these services.

“Such unacceptable criminal behavior by a small group is impacting the many law-abiding citizens who depend on bus services,” Beddoes stated, noting the inconvenience that curtailed services cause to the community. He confirmed that the association is remaining in contact with police representatives to relay concerns and gather updates on the situation, which remains under investigation.

Fiji Police Force spokesperson Ana Naisoro indicated the formation of a taskforce assigned to conduct a thorough investigation and reinforce community safety measures. Naisoro has reassured the public that police efforts are ongoing to tackle these disturbances effectively.

These incidents are reflective of a broader trend concerning public transport safety in Fiji, as similar stoning actions have been reported in other areas, signaling a collective need for community effort and police action to enhance security on public transport.

In a hopeful twist, the ongoing dialogue between transport operators and law enforcement suggests that a proactive approach may yield improvements in safety and restore community trust in bus services.
