The Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has acknowledged that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) report for Nabua Primary School is still pending. A team conducted a visit to the school on November 4, with expectations for the report to be delivered the next day. Despite ongoing follow-ups, the Ministry has not yet addressed the situation.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has also pointed out the harsh conditions at the school, where students face hazardous situations due to the presence of incomplete and poorly maintained buildings. He noted, “Based on the initial information we received, the building constructed under previous management was left unfinished.” He reassured that collaborations with the new management are in progress to find optimal solutions for completing the structure.
Radrodro emphasized that if the school requires any government assistance, they should formally request support through the Ministry of Education. The situation at Nabua Primary School is alarming, with significant structural damage evident in most classrooms, including rusted roofs and large gaps where window panes are missing. These issues endanger student safety and could inadvertently create escape routes.
This situation affects over 900 students and highlights a broader concern regarding the deteriorating state of public education infrastructure in urban areas.
It is crucial for the authorities to act swiftly to resolve these issues and ensure a safe learning environment for students. While the current conditions are worrying, there is hope that with continued advocacy and collaboration between ministries, improvements can be achieved. Prioritizing infrastructure in schools could not only enhance safety but also strengthen the overall quality of education for the children in the community.
