Safety Concerns Raised: Fiji’s PM Weighs In on FICAC Controversy

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that former Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Francis Puleiwai, is safe to return to Fiji. During a press conference held at the Office of the Prime Minister in Suva, Mr. Rabuka addressed concerns regarding Ms. Puleiwai’s safety, labeling them as speculative and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to validate her claims.

Mr. Rabuka questioned, “Who is she afraid of?” and expressed uncertainty about whether any reports had been filed with the police. He asserted, “I believe we are safe. If anyone is under the most threat, it’s me, and I have not felt any danger.” He also remarked on the presence of numerous bodyguards accompanying him.

The controversy surrounding FICAC revolves around the appointment of Barbara Malimali as its chief on September 5, a move that has faced significant criticism. The Prime Minister reiterated that Ms. Puleiwai’s allegations remain unverified, stating, “It’s speculation, it’s not been confirmed,” and added that her claims have not been substantiated or investigated by authorities.
