Former Deputy Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Francis Puleiwai, is considered “safe” to return to Fiji, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. During a press conference in Suva, Mr. Rabuka addressed concerns regarding Ms. Puleiwai’s safety, labeling them as speculative and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to assess the legitimacy of her claims.
He expressed uncertainty about who Ms. Puleiwai might be afraid of and questioned whether any formal reports had been submitted to the police. Mr. Rabuka stated, “I believe we are safe. If anyone is under the most threat, it’s me—and I have not felt any danger,” while also pondering the reason for the extensive security detail accompanying him.
The ongoing FICAC situation revolves around the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC chief on September 5, a selection that has sparked considerable criticism. The Prime Minister reiterated that Ms. Puleiwai’s allegations remain unverified, insisting, “It’s speculation, it’s not been confirmed. She is alleging things that have not been substantiated or investigated by authorities.”
