The recent incident involving an amusement ride at the opening of the 2024 Miss Hibiscus Festival has sparked serious concerns regarding safety at public events.

While the festival typically serves as a vibrant gathering for families and friends, the excitement is overshadowed by potential dangers when safety protocols are not strictly followed. Celebrated for its array of culinary treats, lively music, and strong social connections, the festival features enticing aromas of popcorn, barbecues, and a variety of cuisines, particularly iTaukei, appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds.

The return of the Miss Hibiscus Festival after a five-year hiatus should be celebrated, but this joy must not be marred by negligence in safety. The mishap that occurred on Sunday serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for stringent safety measures for amusement rides. Many of these rides, often in use for decades, are hastily prepared for operation without comprehensive inspections, posing significant risks.

Throughout the years, Fiji has encountered several minor festival-related incidents. However, these occurrences cannot simply be dismissed as mere statistics. The tragic accident last June, where a 21-year-old woman lost her life and two others sustained serious injuries due to a Ferris wheel malfunction in Suva, underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols. In North America, statistics reveal over 1,197 amusement ride accidents in a single year, emphasizing the importance of readiness in addressing potential emergencies in Fiji.

While the Hibiscus Festival is celebrated for its fun and excitement, safety must remain a top priority. Festival-goers expect a thrilling experience, but they should not have to worry about the potential for injury. Parents should feel at ease knowing that a day of enjoyment will not turn into a distressing situation for their children. The committee’s claim that all rides undergo thorough safety checks and certification must be supported by relentless adherence to scrutiny, especially following any incidents.

The festival committee appropriately decided to halt the problematic ride, but this should only be the beginning of comprehensive safety measures. The Ministry of Industrial Relations’ Occupational Health and Safety Department must prioritize consumer safety by ensuring that ride operators are properly certified and medical personnel are present at all times. Establishing safety zones with softer ground, as opposed to hard surfaces, could greatly mitigate the risks associated with amusement rides. Furthermore, an effective emergency response plan is essential for addressing unforeseen incidents.

As the festival continues over the next four days, the primary focus should be the enjoyment of attendees. They should have the opportunity to savor delicious foods, explore the festival atmosphere, and create joyful memories without the looming threat of injury or theft. Organizers are tasked with ensuring constant safety and security, actively implementing measures to restore public confidence.

As we embrace the Miss Hibiscus Festival 2024, it is crucial to remain conscientious of our environment. Ongoing beautification efforts in Suva should not be compromised by littering or vandalism.

Opetaia Ravai, the committee chairman, correctly emphasized the collective goal of fostering secure and positive experiences. Let us heed this call for safety and enjoy the Hibiscus Festival without jeopardizing our well-being.
