The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is urging ferry passengers to promptly report any defects they observe on vessels that could jeopardize their safety. This message, delivered by MSAF’s chief executive officer, Joeli Cawaki, comes amid growing concerns over the maintenance standards of shipping vessels, particularly as the busy festive season approaches.

Cawaki emphasized the importance of informing MSAF about any issues as soon as they arise so that operators can take swift action and ensure the safety of all passengers. He pointed out that consumers expect a level of quality in service when they purchase tickets, and their safety is the top priority.

Certain vessels known to have a history of defects will be under increased scrutiny during this peak period. Each ferry is expected to implement a safe ship management system, and staff are reminded of their responsibility to maintain public safety at all times.

In addressing concerns surrounding passenger capacity limits, Cawaki outlined a proactive approach. Vessels found to be exceeding their capacity will be stopped for investigations, allowing MSAF to understand the causes behind such breaches and apply corrective actions before the vessel can continue its operations.

Acknowledging the financial implications of maintaining ships, Cawaki encouraged operators to conduct regular maintenance to prevent major issues from developing. He also advised passengers to report any subpar seating and hygiene issues, which have been frequent topics of complaint on social media platforms.

MSAF is dedicated to ensuring both vessel cleanliness and compliance with safety regulations, fostering a healthy and comfortable environment for travelers. Cawaki also reminded operators to adhere to scheduled shipping times to facilitate timely departures and arrivals.

This initiative signals a commitment to improving ferry passenger experiences and enhancing safety measures, instilling confidence in the maritime transportation system during the festive season. Increased vigilance and proactive communication could lead to a safer journey for all, ensuring that passengers can enjoy their travels with peace of mind.
