The Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has assured the public of their safety following concerns over the recent release of George Speight, Shane Stevens, and others due to a Presidential pardon this Thursday. Mr. Driu emphasized that the public should remain calm, stating that the current situation in the country is stable and under control.

“There is no threat at the moment, and the situation is manageable,” he said. He explained that the release was a result of a due process involving the judicial system and the Mercy Commission, facilitated by the President.

The police are actively monitoring the situation and, according to Mr. Driu, everything appears to be under control. He mentioned that most inquiries have come from international media, and he reassured them of the calm environment.

Mr. Driu also cautioned the public against taking matters into their own hands, warning that opportunists might exploit the situation for their agenda. He issued a stern warning to those speculating on social media about potential unrest resulting from Speight’s release.

He stated, “If they intend to cause any trouble, I am warning them that we are dedicated to ensuring the safety of everyone and will enforce the law rigorously. No one is above the law, and anyone who tries to create fear will face consequences.”
