Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew is urging the public to prioritize their safety during the festive season, as the number of reported missing individuals has increased in recent months.
Commissioner Chew emphasized the importance of communication, urging individuals to keep their families informed about their whereabouts and expected return times. “The responsibility lies with people to communicate with their families,” he stated. When family members do not hear from loved ones for an extended period, anxiety grows, prompting them to report the individual missing.
Many of the reported missing persons fall within the 16 to 18 age range. In several instances, the police find themselves unable to intervene due to claims of individual rights. “When we receive these calls, we often learn that the person has simply not informed their parents,” Mr. Chew remarked. He reiterated that the police are dedicated to finding these individuals while juggling the challenges posed by their rights.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu echoed these concerns, noting that addressing missing persons cases has become a significant focus for the police as they strive to enhance their investigative efforts.
As the festive period approaches, the call for safety is a timely reminder for everyone to remain vigilant and connected. By fostering open communication, families can reduce anxiety surrounding their loved ones’ safety and well-being.
In summary, with increased cases of missing individuals, authorities are doubling down on their efforts to ensure safety and encourage open dialogue between family members.
