The Vanua of Sabeto has reiterated its support for local business operations, emphasizing that environmental protection must remain a priority. This assertion comes after a significant meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Lion One Metals Company, and the Environment Subcommittee of the Vanua. The gathering was prompted by concerns over wastewater discharge from Lion One’s mining activities, which has reportedly harmed aquatic life, including fish and eels in the Sabeto River.
Following this incident, the Ministry of Environment has advised local villagers to avoid using the river until a comprehensive water quality assessment is conducted. Apete Soro, the Director of Mineral Resources, has informed that further testing is ongoing, with results expected within a week in collaboration with the Water Authority to determine the safety of the water.
Pauliasi Natabe, the Chair of the Environment Subcommittee of the Vanua, expressed frustration over the response from the government and the mining company. Despite Lion One’s two years of operation in the area, the recent episode has raised long-standing fears among the locals about ecological impacts. Natabe emphasized the importance of adhering to strict environmental standards, highlighting, “We want everyone to enjoy what Sabeto has got to offer,” and called for all business operators to be responsible stewards of the environment.
In addition, while discussions regarding compensation are on the table, Natabe confirmed that a committee has been established to ensure fair compensation for affected villagers. The Vanua is also insisting on a detailed report from Lion One regarding the cause of the incident to facilitate transparency and accountability.
