Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “God of War” for Amazon Prime Video. Hurst previously lent his voice to Thor, the Norse god, in the acclaimed video game “God of War: Ragnarok,” making this new role a significant return to the franchise for him.

The character of Kratos is introduced as a Spartan warrior who bears the title of god. The official description portrays him as a figure forged in a culture of warfare, commanding armies until he made a life-altering pact with Ares, the Greek God of War, ultimately losing his soul in exchange for victory in battles. The series will delve into the narrative of the last two “God of War” games, showcasing Kratos’ journey as he raises his ten-year-old son, Atreus.

The storyline follows their quest to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. As they navigate their adventures, the series explores themes of parenting and personal growth, as Kratos strives to teach Atreus how to embrace his divine heritage, while Atreus encourages his father to connect with his humanity.

Hurst’s impressive television resume includes notable performances such as Opie in FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” and the character Beta from AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” His film credits feature prominent roles in “Remember the Titans,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and “We Were Soldiers.” Hurst is also set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of “The Odyssey.”

The journey to screen for Amazon’s “God of War” has been marked by notable developments. Initially greenlit in 2022, the project has seen changes in showrunners, with Ronald D. Moore stepping in after the original showrunner Rafe Judkins exited in October 2024. Moore, who is also the writer and executive producer, operates under his banner, Tall Ship Productions. The first two episodes of the series will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, with executive producers including Maril Davis of Tall Ship, Cory Barlog, and others from the gaming and television industry.

The collaboration involves Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions, highlighting a well-rounded partnership in bringing this beloved video game to life on the small screen. Fans can look forward to an exciting retelling of Kratos and Atreus’ journey, filled with emotional depth and rich storytelling.
