“Rural Teen Marriages Raise Concerns”

Teenagers are reportedly entering into marriages in rural communities. This issue was highlighted by Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) executive director Vani Catanasiga during a workshop on Trafficking in Persons, organized by the Pacific Island News Association and The Asia Foundation.

Ms. Catanasiga noted that several such “marriages” have been reported to FCOSS. “I wouldn’t say they legally got married,” she explained. In some communities, people were unaware that marrying below the age of 18 years is illegal until it was pointed out to them.

“Some people didn’t even understand exactly what trafficking meant. When we explained what trafficking is, they realized it was happening in their communities,” she said. This lack of awareness has led to the normalization of young marriages in rural areas.

Ms. Catanasiga described instances where young women, including high school students, received gifts from older individuals like rural service vehicle providers. She pointed out that communities with limited infrastructure are particularly vulnerable to these types of relationships.

“There aren’t many options for access in these areas, and those with access often hold power, which they use in ways that harm diverse communities and families,” she stated.

She also mentioned that while sharing their stories, the women warned FCOSS against reporting these incidents to the media due to fears of being bullied.
