Gurneet Kaur, the head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the dux of Year Eight. Her commitment to her studies has paid off as she secured the highest marks in both the annual exam and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), scoring an impressive 526 out of 600 at her school in Labasa.

At just 13 years old, Gurneet is the youngest of three siblings and hails from Kawakawa Settlement. She has always been driven by her ambition to become the first doctor in her family. “I studied day and late into the night, including weekends because my aim is to become the first doctor in my family,” she expressed. Her dedication to her education has been evident since Year One when she consistently came first in her class.

Gurneet’s inspiration to pursue medicine comes from the challenges faced by her community members who often have to travel long distances to access healthcare services at Labasa Hospital or Nasea Health Centre. “I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care when needed and alleviate the fear of early death or losing body parts due to diabetes,” she shared.

Grateful for the support she has received along her journey, Gurneet expressed her appreciation for her parents and teachers, acknowledging their crucial role in her achievements. She takes pride in her rural background and aspires to be a role model for others, demonstrating that excellence in education is achievable regardless of the school one attends.

Gurneet’s story is a testament to how determination and hard work can lead to success and positive change. Her aspirations not only focus on personal achievement but also reflect a deep commitment to her community’s wellbeing. As she continues her journey toward becoming a doctor, Gurneet represents hope and inspiration for many young students in her area.

In summary, Gurneet Kaur’s exceptional academic achievement exemplifies the power of perseverance, dedication, and community spirit in shaping a brighter future for herself and others around her.
