Drasa Secondary School manager Hira Naidu has urged the Government to support the construction of a new school building, emphasizing that the existing structure is severely damaged by termite infestation. Speaking at the National Budget consultation at Lautoka Girmit Centre, Naidu highlighted that the school, built over 50 years ago, is in a critical state with rotting timber and deteriorating infrastructure.
Naidu asserted the necessity of government funding in the next budget to ensure a safe learning environment for the students. “The school was made from weatherboard and timber; now it’s rotting, and the floor is going out,” he stated, calling for immediate action.
Additionally, Naidu has called for the establishment of a health centre in Drasa to serve the local community, which includes around 475 active cane farmers and 16 villages. He emphasized that the health centre would eliminate the need for residents to travel to Lautoka City for medical care, offering convenience and better access to health services.
Other pressing requests from the community include the construction of a police post and suggestions to exempt farmers from paying Value Added Tax (VAT) on mechanical sugarcane harvesters, which he believes would alleviate financial pressures on farmers.
Finance Minister Biman Prasad acknowledged the issues raised by Naidu, indicating that the concerns are being taken seriously as the government prepares for the upcoming budget.
This move towards upgrading infrastructure and services reflects ongoing government efforts to support rural communities, paralleling prior initiatives aimed at addressing termite infestations in schools throughout Lautoka, as previously noted by stakeholders in the area. The proactive steps taken by the government not only aim to enhance educational facilities but also signify a commitment to improving overall living conditions for Fijians.
As these discussions continue, there is optimism that the Government’s engagement with community leaders like Mr. Naidu will lead to meaningful developments that cater to the needs of rural populations, fostering a healthier, safer, and more supportive environment for all.
