Seventeen-year-old Anaseini Tinai from Wailotua Village showcased remarkable determination at the Tailevu Zone competition, emphasizing that heart and spirit can outweigh equipment limitations. Competing without shoes, Tinai not only represented her school, Naiyala Secondary, but also highlighted the struggles faced by many rural athletes.
“I was supposed to run the 400 meters, but last-minute changes had me compete in the 100m and 200m instead,” Tinai said, demonstrating her adaptability and willingness to give her best, even when unexpected circumstances arose. Her training began after her school’s inter-house meet on February 29, and despite facing challenges with inadequate sporting gear, she trained diligently every day.
Having traveled a long distance from Wainibuka to Suva, the environment at HFC Bank Stadium was certainly different from her home village. “We don’t have proper running shoes or equipment, but we kept pushing,” she remarked, revealing the perseverance common among young athletes from rural backgrounds.
Tinai’s journey to the competition signifies more than just athletic competition; it reflects the fortitude of many young Fijians pursuing their dreams against the odds. “I want to give back to my school for helping me come this far,” she stated, clearly illustrating her commitment and gratitude.
