The Vodafone National Kaji and Kajiana Championships 2024 concluded yesterday, marking the successful return of the tournament after a five-year hiatus. Over the span of three days, 17 district teams from across the nation gathered at the HFC Stadium, Bidesi, and Buckhurst parks to compete for glory. The tournament witnessed surprising victories from rural districts, which challenged and defeated several well-known teams from urban areas.

Lui Nabogi, the Vice President of Development for the Fiji Primary Schools Rugby Union and games coordinator for the championship, commended the preparation and effort of the participating districts. He noted, “All the teams have prepared really well coming into the competition, and you could see it all play out on the field.” Nabogi highlighted the heightened level of competition this year, especially with the unexpected successes showcased by rural teams compared to previous editions of the event.

He emphasized the importance of the tournament as a platform for students who may not excel academically but possess remarkable athletic talent. “We understand that not all students can excel in the classroom; they are gifted with different talents, and this is a platform through which future rugby players can emerge to represent the Flying Fijians or the Drua,” he stated.

Nabogi also expressed gratitude to the parents and guardians for their enthusiastic support, which was evident as the crowd numbers grew throughout the tournament, illustrating the community’s dedication to nurturing young talent.

This event not only brings together the youth in a spirited competition but also serves as a reminder of the diverse skills possessed by young individuals, showcasing the potential of future stars in Fijian rugby. The support and enthusiasm displayed by the community bodes well for the continued success and growth of rugby in the country.

Overall, the championships represent a hopeful future for Fijian rugby, emphasizing inclusivity and the acknowledgment of different forms of talent beyond academics.

Summary: The Vodafone National Kaji and Kajiana Championships 2024 successfully returned after five years, featuring 17 district teams that showcased their skills, particularly with rural districts achieving unexpected victories. The tournament provided a valuable platform for young athletes, with strong community support adding to the positivity of the event.
