Gurneet Kaur, the head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has made her family proud by achieving the top honor as dux of Year Eight. She excelled academically, earning the highest scores in both the school’s annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), with a remarkable total of 526 marks out of 600.
Originally from Kawakawa Settlement, Gurneet, the youngest of three siblings, has expressed a deep commitment to her studies, dedicating herself to hours of study both day and night, even on weekends. Her motivation stems from a strong desire to become the first doctor in her family—a goal she has worked tirelessly to achieve. Since Year One, she has consistently been at the top of her class.
Gurneet’s aspirations to become a doctor are fueled by her observations of the challenges faced by her community, where residents often have to travel long distances to access medical care at facilities like the Labasa Hospital or Nasea Health Centre. She is determined to improve access to immediate medical assistance in her settlement, stating, “I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care when needed and alleviate the fear of early death or losing body parts due to diabetes.”
Grateful for the support of her parents and teachers in her educational journey, Gurneet also emphasizes her pride in her rural origins. She aims to inspire her peers, proving that with dedication and hard work, students from any school can achieve academic success and positively impact their communities.
