The Matasawalevu Volleyball Tournament successfully concluded yesterday in Naibita, Wainibuka, uniting youths and families in a vibrant celebration of talent and sportsmanship. The tournament aimed to spotlight youth issues and uncover the raw volleyball talent present in the village.

A total of 12 men’s teams and four women’s teams participated, showcasing skills that have often remained hidden within the local communities. Competition director Jerry Cakau expressed his satisfaction with the turnout, noting the participation of teams from various regions including Nadi, Suvavou, Wainibuka, Rakiraki, and Tailevu. He emphasized that the primary goal of the competition was to promote volleyball in rural areas and to nurture grassroots talent.

Cakau elaborated, “We want to promote Volleyball competitions in the rural areas, and we aim to encourage competitive Volleyball for the youths of the community.” The involvement of both national and former national players enriched the competition, elevating the experience for all participants.

As the festive season approaches, the tournament served as a constructive outlet for the youth, providing an alternative to negative activities through sports and camaraderie. Joel Oli, a sponsor from Papua New Guinea and husband to a local, viewed the event as an opportunity to give back to Naibita’s community. He praised the level of competition and the commitment of the local youth, who often have limited access to such opportunities.

Oli believes that events like this can significantly contribute to the personal growth and talent development of the youth, ultimately benefiting the wider community. He acknowledged the tournament’s role in redirecting participants’ focus, reminding them of their potential and capabilities. Gratitude was expressed to all the teams involved, who collectively contributed to the spirited atmosphere of this successful event.

The tournament not only succeeded in promoting the sport but also fostered community spirit, making it a hopeful example of youth engagement through athletics.
