Some rural communities in Ra Province are yet to connect to the electricity grid, despite the government’s launch of a rural electrification program. During a recent tour in the West, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu voiced concerns from local residents regarding the incomplete state of electrification in their areas. He noted that while grid lines have reached these communities, many homes still lack the necessary wiring for connectivity.
“Although the rural electrification project has progressed into the interior of Ra, residents face a common issue: the infrastructure is in place, but the essential connections within homes remain unfinished,” remarked Mr. Seruiratu. He highlighted that in certain locations, wiring is partially completed, with only a few homes connected, as contractors have shifted focus to other areas before fully completing their tasks.
In addition to the concerns about electrification, Mr. Seruiratu addressed the financial challenges municipal councils are encountering. Meeting with officials from small councils like Rakiraki, he gained insights into their difficulties in generating income from ratepayers, which in turn affects their ability to provide necessary services.
“Running a council is quite a challenge given the limited income sources,” he stated, also mentioning the upcoming municipal council elections. He emphasized the need for greater collaboration and support from the government to enable these councils to better serve their communities.
This ongoing dialogue underscores the importance of addressing rural electrification and municipal governance in fostering sustainable development and improving living conditions for residents in Fiji. Such efforts are crucial as communities seek to enhance their quality of life and ensure that all regions benefit from governmental projects.
