A growing concern has emerged regarding school dropout rates in rural communities, prompting calls for enhanced measures in the new Education Act. Joape Toailagi, a trustee of Namataku District School, has voiced his worries about the increasing number of students leaving school prematurely. He advocates for a stronger enforcement of the compulsory education provisions within the Education Act to better ensure that students complete their education.

Toailagi emphasized the importance of education for the future of children, highlighting that the dropout phenomenon is particularly alarming in villages. He believes that a firmer approach needs to be adopted to safeguard children’s educational journeys.

The Education Review Committee noted that while the compulsory education provision is already a part of the current Act, they are open to reconsidering Mr. Toailagi’s suggestions for more robust enforcement strategies. Metuisela Gauna, head of the Ministry of Education’s research and policing unit, mentioned the potential for counseling sessions for parents and students, but affirmed that strict actions may be necessary against guardians or parents if other solutions fall short.

This call for a revised approach to the Education Act resonates with previous comments made by Minister of Education Aseri Radrodro, who has spotlighted the repeated issue of school dropouts across administrations. He has emphasized the need for collaboration among parents, guardians, community members, and educational authorities. During his discussions, Radrodro highlighted the potential introduction of Vocational Technical Institutes aimed at providing alternative educational pathways for students struggling in traditional academic settings.

The Minister’s commitment to community involvement and innovative educational solutions represents a hopeful trend toward reducing dropout rates and enriching educational opportunities for all students. As the Education Act Review consultations continue, there is a collective sense of optimism that these proactive steps will cultivate an environment where children are not only encouraged to stay in school but are also equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in their futures.
