Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. His aspirations include earning a place in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s squad for one of the upcoming tournaments next year. Kabu made his series debut during the 2023 Dubai sevens, which followed his participation in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year.
Kabu recognizes the extensive sacrifice and dedication required to be part of the squad, emphasizing the importance of this accomplishment. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” he remarked, noting that it is a dream for many young rugby players to play alongside the best in the national team. He aspires for another opportunity in the upcoming series.
In addition to his goal of making the national team, Kabu hopes to secure a contract overseas. His rugby journey started with the Natakali Sharks, a team from Naiborebore in Tailevu, and he has also played for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship and the Police Blues sevens team. He expressed gratitude towards senior players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Waisea Nacuqu, for their guidance and support.
Kabu has always looked up to assistant coach Viliame Satala and appreciates the lessons he’s learned from the experienced players, especially regarding discipline. He is determined to follow their example and inspire the next generation of rugby players.
As the national sevens squad resumes their Daily Training Exercise following the Christmas break, they will convene for a training camp next week. Coach Kolinisau is set to field a team at the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, in preparation for the Perth sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
This article not only highlights Kabu’s ambitious goals but also reflects a broader journey of growth and resilience within the sport. His determination to inspire young players is a positive takeaway, fostering a culture of mentorship and aspiration in the rugby community.
