Rupeni Kabu has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC Sevens World Series leg in 2025. The 27-year-old athlete aspires to secure a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man roster for upcoming tournaments next year.

Kabu’s latest appearance on the global stage was during the 2023 Dubai Sevens, marking both his series debut and a significant achievement following his performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year. Acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices required to join the extended squad, Kabu expressed how meaningful it is to be part of the wider selection.

“It’s a tremendous accomplishment to be recognized among such talented players. Every aspiring rugby player dreams of playing for the national side, and I am eager for the chance to represent my country again,” Kabu shared.

In addition to his goal of rejoining the national team, Kabu aims to secure a contract overseas. His rugby journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, and he later played for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship as well as the Police Blues sevens team.

Grateful for the mentorship he received from senior players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, Kabu emphasized the importance of discipline he has learned from them. He also noted how assistant coach Viliame Satala served as a significant inspiration during his formative years in rugby.

Kabu aims not only to continue his growth as a player but also to inspire the next generation of athletes, following the lead of those who came before him. The national sevens team recently resumed their daily training exercises after the holiday break and will enter their next training camp next week. Kolinisau will deploy the team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, ahead of the Perth Sevens set for January 24-26.

Rupeni Kabu’s determination and commitment to his rugby career highlight the spirit of perseverance in sports. As he strives for his goals, Kabu serves as an inspiration to many young athletes dreaming of reaching great heights in rugby.

This narrative not only highlights Kabu’s ambitions but also shines a light on the importance of mentorship and dedication in sports, encouraging young talent to continue pursuing their dreams.
