Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. Kabu is eager to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for upcoming tournaments next year, following his debut in the series during the 2023 Dubai Sevens.

Reflecting on his journey, Kabu emphasized the immense commitment and dedication required to be part of the extended squad, expressing pride in this achievement. He noted, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself. It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side, and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs.”

In addition to his national ambitions, Kabu is also looking to secure an overseas rugby contract. His rugby journey began with Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, followed by his involvement with Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship and the Police Blues sevens team.

Kabu expressed gratitude for the mentorship of senior players such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, as well as his appreciation for assistant coach Viliame Satala, whom he admired as a youth. He acknowledged the valuable lessons on discipline he has learned from these seasoned players, hoping to inspire the next generation of rugby talent.

The national sevens team resumed their Daily Training Exercise after the Christmas break and will enter training camp next week. Coach Kolinisau is preparing for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, ahead of the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.

This focus on hard work, mentorship, and dedication reflects a hopeful future for Kabu and the national team, as they aim to build on their past experiences and strive for success in the upcoming tournaments.
