Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, is focused on securing a spot in the HSBC SVNS series for 2025. He hopes to be included in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for one of the tournaments this coming year. Kabu made his series debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, which followed his earlier performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games.

Kabu acknowledges the dedication and effort needed to be part of the extended national squad, saying, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” and he expresses the aspiration of every young rugby player to compete alongside top talent. In addition to this main goal, Kabu is also aiming to secure an overseas rugby contract.

Originating from Naila in Tailevu, Kabu began his rugby journey with the Natakali Sharks before moving to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and later representing the Police Blues in the sevens format. He appreciates the mentorship he receives from experienced players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, citing them as significant influences on his career. Kabu has also been inspired by assistant coach Viliame Satala, which showcases the importance of guidance in his development.

The national sevens team recently resumed their Daily Training Exercise after the Christmas break and will enter camp next week. The squad is set to compete at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens on January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, followed by the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.

Rupeni Kabu’s journey reflects the perseverance and ambition that are hallmarks of athletes striving for success. His commitment to personal growth and to inspiring younger players speaks volumes about the positive environment fostered within the team.

Summary: Rupeni Kabu is striving to secure his place in the 2025 HSBC SVNS series under coach Osea Kolinisau after a successful debut at the Dubai Sevens in 2023. He emphasizes the sacrifices required to be part of the national squad and aspires to inspire the next generation of rugby players. The national team is preparing for upcoming sevens tournaments.
