Rupeni Kabu has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. At 27 years old, he aspires to be part of head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for upcoming tournaments next year. Kabu made his series debut during the 2023 Dubai Sevens, following impressive performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year.

Kabu, hailing from Naila in Tailevu, emphasizes that being included in the extended squad is already a significant achievement. He expressed his ambition, stating, “It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side, and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs.” Additionally, he aims to secure an overseas contract as his secondary goal.

His rugby journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before moving on to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship, and he has also played for the Police Blues Sevens side. Kabu attributed much of his growth to the mentorship of experienced players in the national squad, including Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu. Growing up, he admired assistant coach Viliame Satala and has been fortunate to learn from him as well.

He noted the importance of discipline and aims to inspire the next generation of players, following the example set by seasoned athletes in the sport. The national sevens squad kicked off their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) following their Christmas break and will enter camp next week. Coach Kolinisau is set to announce a squad for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, leading into the Perth Sevens taking place on January 24-26.

This story encapsulates a young athlete’s dedication and aspirations in rugby, showcasing the importance of mentorship, hard work, and commitment not just to personal success, but also to uplifting future players within the sport. As Kabu and his teammates continue their training and preparation, there’s a sense of optimism for their upcoming tournaments.

Overall, Rupeni Kabu’s journey is an inspiring tale of ambition and perseverance, reminding us all of the dreams and efforts that shape the future of sports.
