Rupeni Kabu has set an ambitious goal for the year 2025: to be selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series. The 27-year-old hopes to secure a place in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for upcoming tournaments this year, building on his world tournament experience from the 2023 Dubai Sevens, where he made his series debut after a commendable showing in the Oceania and Pacific Games.

Kabu, hailing from Naila in Tailevu, acknowledges the sacrifices and hard work required to be included in the extended squad. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” he expressed, emphasizing that every aspiring rugby player dreams of playing alongside the country’s best talent. His aspirations extend beyond the national squad as he aims to gain an overseas contract.

Starting his rugby journey with Natakali Sharks, Kabu later joined Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and has also competed with the Police Blues sevens team. He expresses gratitude for the mentorship of seasoned players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, who have influenced his growth both on and off the field. Additionally, Kabu has always looked up to assistant coach Viliame Satala and appreciates the guidance he has received from him.

As the national sevens squad resumes their Daily Training Exercise following a Christmas break, they are preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. This tournament will serve as a crucial platform for Kabu and his teammates, as they vie for selection in the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.

Kabu’s determination and dedication highlight not only his personal goals but also his commitment to inspiring the next generation of rugby players. His journey exemplifies the spirit of perseverance in sports, a narrative that many aspiring athletes can relate to.

Summary: Rupeni Kabu aims to be selected for the 2025 HSBC SVNS series while reflecting on the sacrifices made to reach the national sevens squad. He seeks an overseas contract and thanks his mentors for their guidance. The national team is gearing up for upcoming tournaments, providing opportunities for players like Kabu to shine.
