Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. He hopes to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for the upcoming tournaments next year. Kabu’s latest appearance was at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, marking his debut in the world series after making a name for himself in the Oceania and Pacific Games this year.

Kabu expressed the immense effort and dedication it takes to be part of the extended squad. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” he remarked, emphasizing that playing alongside the best national players is a dream for any aspiring rugby athlete.

In addition to his goal of representing the national team again, Kabu is also aspiring to secure an overseas contract. His journey in rugby began with the Natakali Sharks, a local Tailevu team, and he furthered his experience with Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship as well as the Police Blues sevens side.

Kabu also acknowledged the support he has received from senior players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, expressing gratitude for their mentorship. He shared how he learned valuable lessons on discipline from these experienced athletes and aims to inspire the next generation of rugby players.

The national sevens squad resumed their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) on Friday following a Christmas break, with plans to enter a training camp next week. Coach Kolinisau will evaluate players for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, before finalizing the team for the Perth Sevens on January 24-26.

This dedication from Kabu and his teammates showcases their commitment to advancing their rugby careers and elevating the national team’s performance on the global stage. With training underway, there is much anticipation for what they can achieve in the upcoming tournaments.
