Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for a spot in another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. His aspiration is to earn a place on head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man team for any tournaments next year. Kabu made his world tournament debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, following a notable performance in both the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year.
The player, who hails from Naila in Tailevu, acknowledges that reaching the extended squad is a significant achievement that requires immense dedication and sacrifice. He remarked, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself. It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs.”
In addition to representing his country, Kabu aims to secure an overseas contract in rugby. His journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before advancing to play for Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship and the Police Blues sevens team.
Grateful for the mentorship provided by senior players like Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, Kabu has gained invaluable lessons regarding discipline and aspirations. He fondly remembers assistant coach Viliame Satala, whom he admired as a young player and considers fortunate to receive guidance from.
The national sevens squad has resumed their training after the Christmas break and will soon enter a preparatory camp. Coach Kolinisau will assemble a team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, before selecting his squad for the Perth Sevens taking place from January 24-26.
In summary, Rupeni Kabu’s determination and hard work reflect the hopes and dreams of many young athletes aspiring to excel in rugby. With the support of experienced players and coaches, he is poised for continued growth and potential success in his career.
This article showcases the dedication and ambition of athletes striving for greatness and underscores the importance of mentorship in sports. Kabu’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring rugby players who aim to reach similar heights.
