Rupeni Kabu has set his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. The 27-year-old rugby player is eager to earn a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for the upcoming tournaments next year.

Kabu’s journey as a rugby player gained significant momentum when he made his world tournament debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, following impressive performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games. He emphasizes the dedication and sacrifices needed to join the extended squad, highlighting that being part of this broader group is a considerable achievement.

“Every young rugby player dreams of playing among the best on the national team, and I hope to be given another opportunity in one of the legs,” Kabu stated. Additionally, he aspires to secure a contract overseas, furthering his career prospects.

His rugby career began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, and he later joined Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship. Kabu also played for the Police Blues sevens team. He expressed gratitude towards senior players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, for their mentorship and guidance.

Kabu has long admired assistant coach Viliame Satala, considering himself fortunate to receive guidance from him as well. He acknowledges the importance of learning discipline from seasoned players and aspires to inspire the next generation of rugby talent.

The national sevens squad is set to resume their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) following their Christmas break, with a training camp scheduled for next week. Coach Kolinisau will finalize the team for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, ahead of selecting the squad for the Perth Sevens on January 24-26.

With a clear vision and determination, Rupeni Kabu’s journey exemplifies the essence of aspiration in sports, reminding us all of the power of hard work and perseverance in achieving one’s dreams.
