Rupeni Kabu, a 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for another leg of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. Under the guidance of head coach Osea Kolinisau, Kabu hopes to secure a spot in the 13-member squad for upcoming tournaments next year.
Kabu’s last appearance at a major international event was during the 2023 Dubai Sevens, which marked his debut in the series following notable performances at the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year. He acknowledges the dedication and sacrifices required to be considered for the extended squad, and he sees this achievement as significant in his pursuit of a career in rugby.
“Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself,” Kabu expressed, emphasizing the dream of young rugby players to compete at this level. Alongside aiming for national selection, he also hopes to land an overseas contract to further his professional career.
Starting his rugby journey with the Natakali Sharks, Kabu later joined Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and has played for the Police Blues sevens team. He attributes much of his growth to the mentorship of senior players in the squad, including Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu. Kabu also fondly recalls the influence of assistant coach Viliame Satala, whom he admired growing up.
“I have learnt a lot from the seasoned players, especially about discipline, and I aspire to inspire the next generation in the same way they inspired me,” Kabu remarked.
The national sevens team has resumed their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after the Christmas break and will enter camp next week. Coach Kolinisau will choose the squad for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, followed by selections for the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.
This story highlights Rupeni Kabu’s dedication to advancing in his rugby career and serving as a role model for aspiring players. His commitment to hard work, discipline, and the support of seasoned players offers hope and encouragement for the next generation of athletes.
