Rupeni Kabu has set his sights on being selected for another HSBC Sevens Series leg in 2025. The 27-year-old rugby player aims to secure a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s squad for one of next year’s tournaments.
Kabu made his world tournament debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, which followed his participation in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that same year. He acknowledges the dedication and hard work required to be included in the extended squad, stating, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself.” He aspires to play among the top players on the national team and is hopeful for another chance in upcoming events.
In addition to his immediate goals, Kabu also hopes to land an overseas contract to further his rugby career. He began his journey with the Natakali Sharks, a team from Naiborebore, Tailevu, before progressing to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and playing for the Police Blues sevens side.
Kabu expresses gratitude for the mentorship of experienced players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu, as well as assistant coach Viliame Satala, who has influenced him since childhood. He hopes to emulate these seasoned players and inspire the next generation of rugby talent.
The national sevens team has recently resumed their Daily Training Exercise after the holiday break, with plans to enter training camp next week. Coach Kolinisau is preparing to form a team for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, ahead of the Perth Sevens from January 24-26.
This story highlights Kabu’s determination and commitment to both his personal ambitions and the sport, providing inspiration to young athletes who aspire to reach high levels in rugby. With strong mentorship and disciplined training, Kabu’s journey reflects the potential for growth in sports, not just in Fiji but on an international scale.
