Rupeni Kabu, a promising 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being selected for the HSBC Sevens Series as part of head coach Osea Kolinisau’s team in 2025. Kabu made his international debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, after showcasing his talent at the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year.

Expressing his aspirations, Kabu acknowledged the dedication required to be among the squad, stating, “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself.” His commitment is fueled not only by personal ambition but by the desire to inspire younger athletes pursuing their dreams in rugby.

Apart from his goal of representing his nation, Kabu hopes to secure an overseas contract to advance his career. He began his rugby journey with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, and later moved to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship, while also playing for the Police Blues in the sevens format.

Kabu credits his growth to the senior players in the squad, such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi and Suliano Volivolituevei, and expresses deep admiration for assistant coach Viliame Satala, who has played a significant role in his development. He aims to embody the discipline he has learned from these seasoned players and hopes to pass on that knowledge to future generations.

As part of their preparation, the national sevens squad commenced their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after the Christmas break and will begin their training camp next week. Kolinisau is set to name a team for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, followed by the Perth Sevens slated for January 24-26.

Kabu’s journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere, demonstrating the power of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication in achieving one’s goals. His story showcases the dreams and aspirations that drive athletes to excel on the international stage.
