Rupeni Kabu, a promising 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being a part of the HSBC SVNS series leg in 2025. The talented athlete aims to secure a spot in head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man squad for one of next year’s tournaments.

Kabu made his series debut at the 2023 Dubai Sevens, building on his performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year. He expresses immense pride in being part of the wider squad, acknowledging the dedication and sacrifices necessary to reach this level. “Being in the wider squad is a big achievement itself. It’s every young rugby player’s dream to play among the best on the national side,” he shared, hoping for another opportunity to showcase his talent.

In addition to his aspirations for national representation, Kabu is also seeking to secure an overseas contract in rugby. His journey began with the Natakali Sharks in Naiborebore, Tailevu, before moving to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua Championship and later representing the Police Blues sevens team.

Kabu has expressed gratitude for the mentorship he’s received from senior players, including Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu. He draws inspiration from assistant coach Viliame Satala, reflecting on the invaluable lessons he’s learned about discipline and leadership. Kabu is determined to follow in their footsteps to inspire future generations of rugby players.

As the national sevens squad resumes their Daily Training Exercise (DTE) after a break, they will enter camp next week in preparation for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. Coach Kolinisau will then select the lineup for the Perth Sevens set to take place from January 24-26.

This optimistic outlook not only highlights Kabu’s dedication and aspirations but also underscores the importance of teamwork and mentorship in the sport. As he continues to work hard towards his goals, there’s a sense of hope that his journey will inspire young athletes to pursue their dreams in rugby.
