The Suva Marathon Club is gearing up for its annual International Women’s Day (IWD) running event, scheduled for March 8. This year’s occasion goes beyond a traditional race; it celebrates gender equality and women’s empowerment, encouraging participants to adopt a more active lifestyle.

Participants like Gina Houng Lee view the event as a perfect blend of fitness and advocacy for women’s rights. Lee, a long-time runner, emphasizes the importance of equal treatment and women’s freedom. “I love running in a group, especially on the seawall,” she said, adding that the IWD event fosters a sense of community where everyone supports each other in achieving their personal goals.

The event features a 10-kilometer race starting at 6 a.m., followed by a 5-kilometer race at 6:30 a.m. With aspirations to inspire women, event organizers aim to see between 100 to 150 runners, welcoming walkers as well to partake in this supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

Gina, who is also a body pump instructor at Zenergy Fitness Studio, is enthusiastic about the opportunity for community building. She encourages newcomers to consider joining the event, viewing each run as a step toward a more active and empowered life. The club’s president, Nancy Simpson, has expressed that the IWD run will leverage fitness to motivate women and promote health and well-being in alignment with this year’s global theme for International Women’s Day.

Reflecting the growing interest in health and fitness among women in Fiji, the IWD running event is positioned to help foster resilience, empowerment, and connection within the community. As the enthusiasm builds, participants eagerly anticipate the race, the exhilaration of running, and the well-deserved coffee treat at the end, ultimately contributing to a positive cycle of motivation and accomplishment.

Looking ahead, the Suva Marathon Club not only focuses on the IWD event but also hosts monthly runs, providing ongoing opportunities for community engagement. There are several exciting upcoming events planned, including the Namosi Marathon Challenge in June and the Suva Marathon later in September, which continues to promote a culture of fitness and empowerment among women.

This event is more than just a race; it’s a movement towards reinforcing the message that women can thrive in all aspects of life, both on and off the track.
