Rugby is having a significant impact on the lives of players in Nalawa, Ra, particularly among the youth involved in the sport. The Vatukoro under-19 team, sponsored by Supercool, exemplifies this positive transformation, demonstrating a strong sense of discipline both on and off the field.
Coach Ilai Nameke noted the remarkable changes since the introduction of sevens rugby to these young players. He shared that the team, which was formed earlier this year as an under-20 side, recently participated in the Wairiki 7s tournament in Taveuni. The focus on discipline has led the players to steer clear of illegal activities, creating a fruitful environment for their development.
Following their participation in Wairiki, Coach Nameke expanded the team by recruiting players under the age of 19 to compete in the RC Manubhai 7s tournament, which took place at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. This village-based team is filled with talented rugby players who have been given the opportunity to shine through the club. Their performance was commendable, reaching the semi-finals of the U19 division—an achievement that exceeded their expectations.
Looking ahead, Vatukoro is now preparing for the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s, scheduled for January 16-18. This focus on competition and personal growth through rugby offers hope for the players, as they continue to build character and teamwork, setting a positive example for their community.
This story highlights the transformative power of sports in shaping young lives, emphasizing discipline, teamwork, and personal growth, which can ultimately lead to brighter futures for the players involved.
