Rugby has had a profound impact on the lives of many players participating in either sevens or rugby union, and this influence is being felt in Nausori, Nalawa, where the sport is thriving. The Vatukoro under-19 team, sponsored by Supercool, exemplifies this positive change, as its players demonstrate commendable discipline both on and off the field.
Coach Ilai Nameke noted the remarkable transformations he has witnessed since the team’s engagement in sevens rugby. Established earlier this year as an under-20 side, the team showcased their potential at the recent Wairiki 7s tournament in Taveuni.
According to Nameke, the players have been steering clear of illegal activities and negative influences, which has contributed to their success. This discipline off the field is a significant achievement for the community. After the Wairiki event, Coach Nameke brought younger players into the squad to evaluate their abilities at the RC Manubhai 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, where the team impressively reached the semi-finals of the under-19 division.
“This is a village-based team, and these kids are talented, so we’ve created a platform for them to shine through our club. Reaching the semi-finals was an unexpected success, and we are grateful for this opportunity,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Vatukoro is now preparing to participate in the upcoming Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s tournament scheduled for January 16-18.
This article highlights not only the growth of rugby as a sport but also its role in fostering positive character development and community spirit among the youth. With upcoming tournaments, there is hope for continued success and further opportunities for these young players to thrive both in sport and in life.
