Rugby has profoundly influenced the lives of many young athletes, particularly those involved in the sport in Nausori, Nalawa, Ra. The Vatukoro under-19 team, sponsored by Supercool, exemplifies this positive impact, showcasing discipline both on and off the field.
Coach Ilai Nameke highlighted the transformative journey these players have undertaken since joining the sevens rugby program. “We’ve observed significant changes in their behavior and attitude,” he noted. Since its formation earlier this year as an under-20 squad, the team participated in the recent Wairiki 7s tournament in Taveuni.
According to Nameke, the players exhibit commendable discipline, steering clear of harmful activities that could jeopardize their futures. “These boys are disciplined off the field, they shy away from illegal activities that would get them in the wrong hands of the law, so it has been fruitful,” he expressed.
Following their performance at the Wairiki event, Nameke extended the recruitment of younger players under the age of 19 to gauge their potential at the RC Manubhai 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. “This is a village-based team, and these kids possess the talent to thrive in rugby. We provided them with an opportunity to shine through the club. Reaching the cup semi-final in the U19 division was an unexpected achievement, and we are grateful for the blessings that brought us here,” Nameke shared.
Looking ahead, Vatukoro is gearing up for the upcoming Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s scheduled for January 16-18, aiming to build on their recent successes.
This story is a testament to the positive influence of sports like rugby in shaping young people’s lives, encouraging discipline, teamwork, and personal development. As Vatukoro continues to cultivate talent and character, their journey serves as an inspiration to other teams and communities.
In summary, the Vatukoro under-19 rugby team’s successful journey showcases the sport’s ability to instill discipline and provide opportunities for growth among youth, emphasizing the importance of community support and engagement in athletics.
