Maika Ratuvere, the talented 18-year-old fullback from the Under-18 Deans championship-winning team, is eager to build a future in medicine while pursuing his passion for rugby. Ratuvere, who hails from Bagata, Cakaudrove, plans to become either a nurse or a health inspector as a backup to his rugby career.
Recently, he showcased his skills by representing the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 side in the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. As a key player, he played a vital role in leading his QVS U18 team to victory in the Deans trophy this year.
“I wanted to test my fitness level in sevens rugby after the conclusion of the Deans rugby competition,” Ratuvere expressed, highlighting his dedication to the sport. He found QVS to be the ideal environment for experiencing independence, forming strong bonds with his teammates.
Discussing his rugby journey, Ratuvere reminisced about playing since his early days in Kaji rugby with the Nasinu and Tailevu teams. His experience includes a stint in rugby league as a halfback for his former school’s U15 team. Despite facing several injuries throughout his career, he remains optimistic and committed to balancing sports and academics, emphasizing the importance of versatility and dedication.
“I try my best to control it,” he stated while acknowledging the challenges of managing both sports and studies. Ratuvere appreciates the camaraderie within the team, stating, “There is a tight bond within the team in and off the field.” His experience in rugby has taught him discipline, a quality he values.
Though he was initially selected for the U18 Fiji Secondary school extended squad, he had to withdraw due to an injury, yet remains motivated to keep pursuing his dreams. With maternal roots in Batiri village, Nadroga, he also enjoys playing volleyball and is currently focused on improving his fitness while searching for a holiday job.
