Lepani Bavai, a center for Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 rugby team, has attracted the attention of international scouts during the ongoing Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Bavai was approached by three scouts following his pivotal performance in the semi-final match, where MBHS secured a narrow 17-15 victory over Queen Victoria School. They are set to compete against two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the final this Saturday.
In an interview with SUNsports, Bavai stated that he has decided to delay any offers from the scouts, expressing a desire to pursue a career in rugby league. “I believe it’s a calling for me, and I owe a lot to my parents for their unwavering support,” he said.
Bavai acknowledged the challenges faced during the semi-final against QVS but expressed gratitude toward his teammates for maintaining their composure. “It was a tough match, and I’m thankful for the chance to represent my school. I look forward to the final,” he added.
MBHS U17 head coach Jonetani Rika described their team as underdogs heading into the final, emphasizing the need for improvement after a closely contested semi-final. “We have to address our mistakes, especially as we face Ratu Kadavulevu School, who have a strong record and are well-respected in secondary schools rugby,” Rika noted.
He highlighted the significance of the upcoming match, likening it to a David and Goliath battle while affirming their commitment to compete seriously. When asked about potential plans should they win and travel to Japan next year, Rika reiterated their focus on the upcoming match against RKS and the importance of the students continuing their education after the Deans competition.
Bavai, originally from Makadru in Lau, commented on the enhanced competition level of the Deans Trophy this year, noting unexpected upsets by lesser-known schools.
