At just 20 years old, Phillip Baselala has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, securing his place in the professional rugby arena. The scrumhalf for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua reflects on a year filled with both challenges and achievements as he looks forward to 2024.
One of the most significant obstacles Baselala faced this year was recovering from surgery, which kept him off the field for eight months. “It was a challenging time for me,” he admitted. “Coming out of surgery and not being able to play was tough, but I worked hard to get back on the field.” His return signifies not only a physical recovery but also highlights his mental fortitude and dedication to rugby.
Baselala is notable as the youngest player to move from the Fiji Secondary Schools Deans rugby competition to the Fijian Drua squad, making his Super Rugby Pacific debut against the Melbourne Rebels in Suva. So far, he has played in four matches in the Shop n Save Super Rugby competition and is eager for more opportunities in the upcoming seasons.
Looking towards 2025, Baselala has set a clear goal for himself: to gain more game time. “There’s a lot of competition from my brothers in the squad,” he acknowledged, committing himself to hard work and perseverance.
The upcoming Super Rugby season is expected to be even more competitive due to a new format, yet he remains optimistic about the team’s preparations. “Pre-season has been tough, but all the players are fit and ready. It’s going to be a tough competition, but the boys are working hard,” he stated.
