Spread the love

Breyton Legge, a determined 20-year-old rugby player, is making significant strides in his career with his recent selection for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua development squad. Known for his remarkable journey through various rugby teams, including Suva Grammar School and Waikato, Legge is cultivating a reputation as one of the promising talents in the sport.

Having inherited his passion for rugby from his father, Mike Legge, a former player and current rugby coach associated with Fiji Rugby, Breyton started playing at an early age. Initially dabbling in rugby league in Australia, he transitioned to rugby union after his family relocated to New Zealand. His father’s influence played a crucial role in this decision, as he sought to follow in his dad’s footsteps in the union format.

Legge’s time at Suva Grammar School saw him contribute to the U17 Deans winning team, which led to a scholarship at Hamilton Boys High School. He further impressed selectors, representing Fiji at both the U18 level and the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship. Notably, his performance during the U20 championship highlighted his potential as he competed against teams like Australia, England, and Ireland.

As he now ventures into the Drua franchise, Legge is focused on enhancing his skills. He acknowledges the challenges associated with stepping up from the National Provincial Championship (NPC) to Super Rugby, emphasizing the need for rapid learning to meet coaches’ expectations. His dedication to learning from seasoned players like Emosi Tuqiri and Peni Ravai is also evident, as they guide him in areas like recovery and physical preparedness.

Breyton’s short-term goal is to make his debut in the 2025 season, ideally in front of family and friends, an experience he cherishes. He also hopes to represent the Flying Fijians in the 2027 Rugby World Cup, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to his heritage and culture. Despite his ability to represent multiple countries due to his eligibility—Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, and England—he remains resolute about donning the white jersey of Fiji.

Recently returning from a training camp in Kadavu, Legge has been keeping himself in peak physical condition during the off-season, balancing training with relaxation and enjoyment of video games.

Breyton Legge’s journey symbolizes hopefulness for the future of rugby in Fiji and serves as an inspiration for young athletes. His story showcases hard work, dedication, and a strong connection to heritage, positioning him as a promising figure in the sport. As he climbs the ranks, there is excitement surrounding his potential contributions to rugby at both the national and international levels.
